Our Term 2 concept is Connections and PERSPECTIVES. We will look at why people think differently about places and ways of doing things.
We have been studying connections and perspectives for the first part of this year. Connections is not a topic - it is a concept...
Topics are short units of work to explore a theme. Concepts are big ideas and we explore topics through using our concept. Example: Topic - the water cycle, how it works Concept - the water cycle, how it works, how it helps us (purpose), what are the effects of pollution on the water cycle, how does it connect us to other living things, impact of changes ...etc. Topic - Rotorua, where is it, what is here, how is it used, who is here, what is our history? Concept - Rotorua, (all of the above), what impact do visitors have on our place, how and why do they decide what to visit, why and how are we connected to it, what has changed over the years and why, what responsibilities do we have to our environment, how do we use our resources (and why), ...etc.. So far we have been looking at: KO Au (I am) Who am I? Who am I connected to? Who are our families (and ancestors)? How and why and I connected to them? Who are we as a community and city. We are beginning to explore who are we as a nation, global citizens? How and why do we impact on/effect each other? What is our connection to the world? What are our cultural connections? How does this shape our perspectives and how do we value the perspectives of others? |
